La Gomera - Magic Island

Map of the Canaries

General Information
At a distance of about 400 km from the African coast you can find La Gomera, the smallest but one of the Canary Islands. Surrounded by Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro, the island, showing almost circular shape (22 by 25 km), is located in the climatic zone of eternal spring.
Since 1982, the connection between the central governments in Madrid and the Canary Islands (Canarias) has become less strong. The islands received an autonomic state. Besides tourism the cultivation of platanos, which means bananas, is an important economic factor for the island. Bananas thrive best with temperatures continuously higher than 20° C.
San Sebastian is the capital of La Gomera and seat of the authorities. The town is also renowned as the last stop of Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus) on his first discovery tour to America – or India, as it was meant to be.
Compared to the other Canary Islands, Gomera is relatively old. According to the geologists’ results, the basalt complex originated 15 – 20 million years ago. Together with the basalt layers, which are 10 million years old, it builds a ring round the mountainous central region of the island.
The highest mountain on La Gomera is the Garajonay with 1,487 m. An area of 40 km2 was pronounced protected national park in 1981 and has been registered as world cultural heritage by the UNESCO.
The world famous and almost forgotten whistle language (El Silbo) has been taught in school for some years again now.
